Dive in to Local Arts & Culture at the Latest Albuquerque Museum Exhibit

One of the benefits of living in a place like Albuquerque is the chance to learn about and experience a variety of cultures. The Albuquerque Museum strives to showcase works, pieces, and stories from a wide spectrum of people, and the latest exhibit is no exception.

Visions of the Hispanic World” has been on view at the museum since November 10th, 2018,  and it will stay on display until March 31st, 2019. Organized by the Hispanic Society of American and curated by the Executive Director Mitchell A. Codding, it’s truly a can’t-miss exhibit.

“Visions of the Hispanic World”

A woman at an art exhibitThe exhibit as a whole details the narrative of cultures in Spain and how their influence and heritage grew within the area and still does today. Over 220 works are included, covering 3,00 years of time and history. Some of the works have never even been exhibited before!

The pieces on display are all part of the Hispanic Society’s own Museum and Library collections, and will include things like archaeological artifacts from the Iberian Peninsula, art work from Islamic Spain, and manuscripts from a variety of ages, as well as sculptures, decorative arts, and paintings. The pieces date all the way back to the Medieval Age and stretch to the early 20th century.

The goal of the exhibit is to allow New Mexican residents to both observe the larger world culture, as well as see how their own region was influenced by the Hispanic world.

Part I

An ancient bustThe first part of the exhibit takes place November 10th through March 31st and will deal with the oldest works. The Ancient, Islamic, Medieval, Golden Age, Colonial, and 19th century Spain and Latin America will be showcased. Works from this periods will be by artists including El Greco, Velázquez, and Zubarán.

Part II

Part II will take place from December 22nd to March 31st. While it covers a significantly smaller period, – painter Francisco de Goya through the 1920s in Spain – it still offers a wealth of material. Often referred to as the father of modern art, Goya had an enormous impact on the artistic that still shows up today.

Visit the Exhibit

Since the exhibit is a special, limited-time feature at the Albuquerque Museum, visitors will have to pay an extra fee to gain admittance. Children under 12, however, don’t have to pay, and there is no charge during the museum’s free days.

How to Buy a Home in One Year: A Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s start the new year off right. If you’ve been dreaming of a new home, it’s time to get started. Here’s a month-by-month guide to planning for and buying a new home. It’s about time to set your new year’s resolution, right?

January: Brush Up on Your Market Knowledge

Check out things like current inventory in your city, average sales prices, and the listing-to-sales-price ratio.

This research will help you familiarize yourself with the market.

February: Address Your Budget

Let’s finalize our budget shall we? The easiest way to do this is to get pre-approved for a mortgage.

Meet with a lender (let us know if you’d like a recommendation) to review your finances. The lender will go over your financial history, and then let you know what the bank is willing to lend you.

Now you have an idea of what your mortgage will be and what you can afford in a home.

March: Find Your Perfect Location

A park full of bright trees, each at a different stage in the fall process (one is red, one yellow, and one green).Do some soul searching. Where will you be happiest? Explore locations based on their job market, housing affordability, and overall quality of life. The goal is to narrow down your search to one city.

If you have the means, try to take some time off to go and visit a few cities. Once you find a city, it’s time to narrow your search down even further by pinpointing specific areas or neighborhoods that will best meet your needs.

April: Find the Right Agent

Find the right real estate agent to help you buy a home. Trust us: they’ll save you time, money, and more than a few headaches.

May: Define Your Dream Home

We recommend starting by defining your “must-have” features. Think of the things in your home you can’t live without. That’s a great place to start.

It’s also important to know the difference between “must-have” (i.e. you need 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms) and “nice-to-haves” (it would be nice to have granite countertops but you can also live without them.)

June-July: Begin Searching

Use a handy home search tool like ours to begin browsing homes for sale in your target area. Once you find a home that you like, it’s time to schedule a tour.

Private home tours are often better than traditional open houses because you have more time to walk through the home, without the pressure of competing with other potential buyers.

At some point in your home-search journey, you’re likely to come across at least one home that calls your name.

August: Fall in Love and Make an Offer

Work closely with your agent to compare recently sold homes in the area and craft the perfect offer.

Ask your agent for their advice—like whether or not they think the price is right for this home, as well as what other contingencies you might want to include in your offer. This is when your real estate agent will prove truly valuable: they’ll be able to provide useful insight in order to help you get the home of your dreams for the best possible price.

September: Schedule All the Things

Let’s get down to business. It’s time to negotiate with the seller, schedule an inspection, have your real estate agent complete any renegotiations (based on that inspection), and get the home appraised by a professional.

You’ll also have to take care of some more paperwork to finalize your mortgage loan.

October – December: Let’s Start Closing

Buckle up, because we’re in it for the long haul! Here’s where you’ll finalize your mortgage approval (this requires a ton of paperwork) and meet with an attorney to set closing dates and sign paperwork prior to closing. This is also the time when you’ll review closing fees and the exact monthly costs for your home.

At the end of it all comes the close. You’ll pay the remaining closing fees, sign all the paperwork, and collect your keys Congratulations! You just bought a home.

A Holiday Guide for the Best Winter Events in Albuquerque

December is almost here, and the holiday season is finally upon us! Although we may not have Jack Frost nipping at our nose here in Albuquerque, there are still tons of chances to deck the halls and get in the holly jolly holiday spirit.

From light festivals to Christmas parades, explore a few of the highlights happening around the area, and plan our you schedule of festivities.

Hanging of the Greens

A wreath hanging on a wall. One of the oldest traditions at the University of New Mexico, the Hanging of the Greens features almost 14,000 luminarias, making it one of the biggest luminaria displays in the area. Although it takes place on campus, the whole community is invited to attend.

Students will carol across campus, singing Christmas classics, as they walk to present the university President with a wreath. Stick around for the reception afterwards, and bring an unwrapped children’s book to donate to the children’s hospital.

Twinkle Light Parade

The parade starts just as the sun starts going down, so the twinkling lights of the floats and parade vehicles cast a comforting glow over the city. Come out and celebrate the holiday season with the community, and enjoy this family-friendly event.

Old Town Holiday Stroll

An outdoor holiday market. The Old Town Holiday Stroll is a great opportunity to explore the sights and sounds of Old Town while you celebrate the holidays. Not only will there be a tree lighting ceremony, but all of the shops and restaurants in Old Town will be open for business!

Enjoy warm hot chocolate, live musical performances, and all of the holiday sales at Old Town retailers. If you can’t attend the celebration in person, it will be broadcast live on KOB 4!

The Bugg Lights

Various Christmas ornaments.A celebration that dates back 48 years, the Bugg Light Festival is a holiday institution. The festival features over 300,000 lights, tons of festive decorations, over 100 Christmas trees, and much more.

Opened nightly from Tuesday to Sunday until December 30th, visitors can enjoy holiday food, drinks, and fun — plus free admissions! If you want to donate to the festival, all proceeds will go towards continuing the tradition and local non-profits.

Luminaria Tour

A hanging lantern.The Luminaria Tour is undoubtedly an Albuquerque Christmas tradition, and it’s celebrating its 54th anniversary this year. Bringing together community members on the night of Christmas Eve, the ABQ RIDE takes attendees on a guided tour through the warm luminaria lights in the city.

Although tickets for this year have sold out for the official ride, you can still take your own tour through the lights, from the Convention Center to Old Town. Plus, you can remember to buy your tickets early next year!
